CHAPTER NINE

“WELL, AREN’T YOU just the cutest little girl I’ve seen all day?” Izzy said as she entered Janie’s room. Standing up in the crib, the toddler was laughing as she bounced on the mattress, no longer attached to the oxygen tubing as she had been the last time Izzy had visited her. It had only been a week since the child’s surgery, but she was improving every day.

“Dr. Murphy came around earlier and said that she could be discharged tomorrow as far as he was concerned, but we had to get it cleared by you since you are the attending doctor,” Janie’s mother said.

Izzy stepped in front of the crib and examined the little girl. Her chubby cheeks, once ashen, were a healthy pink and her brown eyes sparkled with mischief. This poor baby had struggled so much with her breathing before Ben had operated and taken the mass from her lung. She would still need to be followed closely by her local doctors, but for now she had a good prognosis.

“Let me take a listen and then I’ll check over her recent vital signs. If everything looks good, I don’t see why she can’t return home.”

Janie’s mother lifted her squirming daughter out of the crib and sat down so that Izzy could place the bell of her stethoscope against Janie’s chest. Izzy squatted down in front of them and listened to Janie’s heart and lungs. When her exam was finished, Izzy looked up at the anxious mom. “She sounds perfect. As long as her vital signs are good and Dr. Murphy says he’s okay with her being discharged, I don’t see any reason why she can’t go home.”

Izzy stood and her head immediately began to swim. Clutching the arm of the chair, she steadied herself and waited for the dizziness to pass. She’d done this to herself. She was a doctor. She knew that a pregnant woman was prone to orthostatic hypotension and needed to move slowly when standing.

“Are you okay?” Janie’s mother asked as she placed her arms on Izzy’s. At some point the woman had placed the toddler back in the crib.

“I’m fine,” Izzy said, as her head finally cleared of the pretty dancing lights.

Janie’s mother loosened her hold on Izzy’s arms, but she didn’t let go. “Why don’t you sit down for a minute?”

Izzy wanted to refuse, but she was afraid the woman might mention it to the staff if she didn’t assure her she was okay. “That would be nice.”

“I did the same thing when I was expecting Janie,” the woman said, taking the seat across from Izzy. “You’ll get used to it.”

Now Izzy’s spinning mind had nothing to do with her blood pressure. “How did you know?”

“I didn’t, not for sure, until now.” Janie’s mother smiled, looking as mischievous as her daughter.

“I don’t understand,” Izzy said. Her feeling faint could have been caused by a number of things, such as dehydration. Why had this woman gone straight for the pregnancy diagnosis?
